Blockhouse pond was known as a safe place for residents living along the shoreline during the 1813 bombardment of Lewes. It has been a safe place for visitors, resident patients, and other people seeking peace.

Blockhouse pond Is a lake close to Lewes in Delaware; it is located near Bethel Cemetery and close to Beebe Medical Center. The Blockhouse Pond park was created in 1976 after the Civilian Conservation Corps drained it in 1934. the move was an effort to control mosquitoes breeding in the pond.

In October 2021, a marker was unveiled to observe the historical blockhouse pond. It’s the newest marker of Delaware history sponsored by Stephen Smyk, a Delaware house of representatives.

The blockhouse pond has a beach available for use from morning to evening from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Fire, alcohol, or water vessels are not allowed at the pond. You can enjoy bird watching and the peaceful scenery. The pond offers the following features;

Fishing in the Blockhouse Pond

Blockhouse pond is a favorite fishing spot for families in Lewes, Delaware. Fishing is allowed at the pond within required regulations. Several fish species found in the pond include; the striped bass, summer flounder, and largemouth bass. Visit the Park and enjoy fishing with your family.

Blockhouse pond has great reviews; according to a previous visitor, “When one goes to Lewes, one thinks of all the basic beach things. The George H. P. Smith Park gives visitors a little more than just a beach town. It provides green space for people to enjoy and learn about the conservation and promotion of the local plants and nature. The Blockhouse Pond is also part of the Park. The Park is located just a block from Savannah Street behind the Beebe Hospital. If you stay in Lewes and have time for nature, get to it. If you do not have time, just to know that it is a park.”
